Overview
This sanskara is an extension of Punsavana (physical development of the child).
Seemantonnayan sanskaar serves to mental development of the child.
A ritual, in which the mother pays attention to brain development of the child. Every physical and mental aspect of the foetus is taken care of by virtue of both these rituals. the child’s mental development depends entirely on the parent and that the way they lead their intellectual lives will leave its impression on the child. Its literal meaning is “lifting up of hair”. During the rite, the husband had to lift up the hair of his wife, hence the name of the rite.
‘The Grihya Sutra’ ascertain the time of this sanskara during the fourth or fifth month (in some community the sanskara is performed in seventh month) of the pregnancy.
